Third Rail

Every city runs on something nobody looks at.

Under the platform there’s a rail that carries the current. It has no sign on it, no light, no name. People stand two feet away from it every day and never once think about it. It just works, and it keeps working, and the day it stops is the only day anyone learns it was there.

This album is about everything that lives down there.

Every Light On was the lights — what you see from the street. Voltage was the current running behind them. Third Rail is the thing underneath both: the wire in the wall, the substation nobody visits, the fiber laid in 1999 and never once used, the second shift that starts after the building empties out.

Twenty-two tracks. One city, one night, from eleven in the evening to the hour the streetlights switch off.

The people in these songs are not heroes. A man who comes to the platform every Friday just to watch four thousand people leave, and stays. Two men who have been friends for twelve years through a loose brick in a wall, and have never said so. A night engineer who puts his hand flat on a concrete wall every day at six for forty years, and the building that noticed. Someone who stopped giving all of himself a long time ago and calls it a brownout, because at least a blackout would be honest.

Nobody in this record gets credited. That’s the point.

Somewhere around three in the morning a few of them figure something out: the work that disappears the second it’s done is the good kind. Nobody holds up a lamp and says look what I kept lit. They just keep it lit.

Then the sun comes up and the lights go off one at a time, because they aren’t needed anymore.

Which is not a loss.
